A plan in Cedar Rapids to use a sales tax to pay for flood protection was rejected on Tuesday. The tax would have helped raise funds for flood walls on each side of the Cedar River.

Some officials in Cedar Rapids feel that this was one of the last viable ways to fund flood protection in their city.

The plan failed by about 600 votes.
