The University of Iowa plans to eliminate the use of trays in the Hillcrest Dining Hall this semester.

Using trays causes an increase in water waste, since the trays have to be cleaned in addition to plates and silverware. It also causes an increase in food waste because students who use trays tend to fill the trays with more food than they can consume.

Iowa State University already switched to tray-less dining. This change caused a 39 percent reduction in food waste.
