UI to host sustainability rally

On October 11, the University of Iowa is hosting a sustainability rally for the campus and community.

The rally will take place in the Kinnick Stadium press box. Participating groups include the UI Environmental Coalition, Engineers for a Sustainable World, ECO Hawks, Sierra Student Coalition, City of Iowa City, Iowa City Summer of Solutions, the Backyard Abundance program, representatives from UI President Sally Mason’s office, Facilities Management, the Sustainability Curriculum Advisory Committee, the Water Sustainability Initiative, and the Office of Sustainability.

Students will have a chance to meet with these groups and form relationships with them.

Kinnick Stadium recycling improved during second home game

The University of Iowa’s recycling efforts at Kinnick Stadium increased between the football team’s first and second home games.

During the first game volunteers collected more than two tons of recyclables, and diverted 40 percent of the waste that would have gone to the landfill.

During the second home game volunteers collected more than three tons of recyclables, and diverted 57 percent of the waste from the landfill.

Kinnick Stadium recycling plan successful during first game

During last Saturday’s football game at Kinnick Stadium, the University of Iowa’s new recycling efforts were very successful.

More than two tons of recyclable materials and 620 pounds of food waste were collected. This reduced the amount of waste that would have gone to the landfill by 40 percent.

The recycling team aims to increase the amount of waste diverted from the landfill to 60 percent this season.

Much of the food waste gathered is being used for composting.

UI to increase recycling efforts at Kinnick Stadium

The University of Iowa Office of Sustainability, Athletics Department, ECO Hawk student organization and Delta Tau Delta fraternity are working together to increase recycling at the university’s Kinnick Stadium.

Recycling station will now be available both outside and inside the stadium to accommodate tailgating and concession waste. Volunteers will work at these stations to help sort the recycling.
