The spring 2012 semester will mark the first time the University of Iowa has hosted classes within its newly restored Art Building West since it was damaged by the 2008 flood.

“In some ways it is bigger than a new building opening because it’s sort of an old friend and you’re meeting again, going to a class reunion,” said Senior Vice President for Finance, Doug True. “And it is a stunning building. A lot of us have forgotten what a great building it is.”

The repair cost of Art West came to $14.2 million, just short of the $14.8 million estimate. Part of that cost includes an “invisible” flood wall  – an emergency flood barrier that can be constructed in a short amount of time.

The University of Iowa estimates that the total cost of the 2008 flood, including damage, mitigation, and recovery could total to almost $1 billion.
