At least five tornadoes touched down in the Polk County area on Thursday.
No fatalities have been reported, but at least seven people were hospitalized when the roof was ripped off of Vermeer Corporation in Pella. There was also serious building damage in several towns, including Marshalltown, where the clock tower on the Marshall County Courthouse was ripped off the building. Around 12 houses were damaged and officials had to repair several gas leaks in Bondurant.
Tornado warnings began in the area at 2:55 p.m., with the first spotting at 4:15 p.m. At 4:46 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a warning in Marshalltown stating, “This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!”
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will tour the damage today.
