Listen to this week’s radio segment here or read the transcript below. This week’s segment discusses recent sustainability efforts in Des Moines, Iowa.

Part of Des Moines is about to get “greener”.

This is the Iowa Environmental Focus.

Each year, the Environmental Protection Agency chooses a few cities to participate in their Greening America’s Capitals project. Des Moines was one of the five cities picked in 2012.

This project involves incorporating green building and green infrastructure strategies on a small portion of the city. It’s expected that these strategies will then be used as a model for future construction projects.

The area of Des Moines chosen is the 6th Avenue Corridor. The plans are to add trees, permeable pavement and rain gardens. All of these additions will limit runoff that pollutes the nearby Des Moines River.

Public meetings early next year will help determine the next steps for greening Des Moines.
