On the Radio: Drake University aims to become a more sustainable campus

Listen to this week’s radio segment here or read the transcript below. This week’s segment discusses the sustainability efforts of Drake University.

Through their “Blue is Green” initiative, Drake University is becoming a more sustainable campus.

This is the Iowa Environmental Focus.

In 2007, Drake University developed an action plan called “Blue is Green” to improve sustainability and decrease emissions.

One of their recent sustainability projects Drake installed motions sensor on all the lights in academic and administrative buildings. Additionally, the school’s vending machine lights only switch on when someone approaches.

Drake is also trying to go paperless by 2015. The school’s athletic department already distributes their schedules, itineraries and media guides electronically, which saves almost 700,000 sheets of paper each year.

Finally, Drake students have portable solar panels available for check out. These solar panels can power many of the events around campus such as the electronics used for outdoor music.
