Listen to this week’s radio segment here or read the transcript below. This week’s segment discusses ways to reduce your environmental impact during the holiday season.

From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, our nation throws away a million extra tons of garbage every week.

This is the Iowa Environmental Focus.

The holidays are a rough time for our environment, but with a few changes our negative impact can be reduced.

Consider using recycled gift-wrap, or not wrapping presents at all to reduce holiday waste. If you’re into decorating, look into purchasing LED holiday lights, and use natural decoration such as dried citrus and cinnamon sticks around the house instead of non-recyclable artificial decorations.

Also, if you purchase a live Christmas tree, look into whether or not your community will recycle the tree for wood chips or mulch.

As for the holiday feasts, consider donating untouched food to homeless shelters and creating compost from leftover food scraps.
