With “Smart Thermostats,” Rockford residents stay warm, cut costs


As the holiday season grows more frigid, Rockford, Iowa residents may save on energy costs thanks to students in the Hawkeye Community College heating and air conditioning program.

Students are installing energy-saving “smart thermostats” in local homes, reports GlobeGazette.com .

With new technology, Rockfordians could save up to 15-20 percent on their bills.

About 70 municipal utilities across Iowa may participate in the program. Rockford is the first to participate.

Rockford has 534 homes, of which about 100 homeowners have signed up to have the smart thermostats installed. Many of the homeowners are retired citizens….
