Hog producers are among those hurt by the drought in Iowa.
Influenced by the high feed prices, hog farmers are seeing a per-animal loss of about $12.80 this year. This is expected to increase to $17.70 next year.
Hogs are a $5 billion dollar industry in Iowa.
The high feed prices caused by the drought have impacted hog producers outside of Iowa as well. One of Canada’s largest hog producers, Big Sky Farms, recently filed for bankruptcy, citing the high feed costs as a major factor. Likewise, many hog producers around the U.S. are reporting heavy losses.
