The Environmental Integrity Project released a report Tuesday which identified twenty coal ash dump sites as the sources of groundwater and soil contamination across ten states.
Among the sites listed are The Prairie Creek Generating Station in Cedar Rapids and the Fair Station in Muscatine, which the EIP claims have contributed to elevated levels of contaminants throughout the affected area.
“Those who think these (health) threats should go unaddressed are wrong,” Jeff Stant, director of the group’s Coal Combustion Waste Initiative, said during a conference call with reporters.
A spokesman for Alliant Energy, which operates the Prairie Creek Generating Station, said they are reviewing the report.
